What are PRP injections?

PRP or platelet rich plasma injections done in office. This procedure leverages growth factors released from platelets in your own blood to stimulate hair follicle activity and promote new hair growth. A small vial of blood is taken from a vein in your arm and processed to increase the concentration of platelets in a fraction of plasma. This platelet rich plasma is then injected into the scalp in areas of hair thinning.

How many treatments are recommended?

While the number of treatments may vary depending on individual factors, an initial series of treatments is usually recommended at monthly intervals for three months followed by maintenance injections every six to twelve months. Patients usually notice results within two to three months.

Is there any downtime or side effects associated with PRP injections for hair loss or thinning?

There is generally minimal downtime associated with PRP injections. Some potential side effects include bruising, soreness, headache or temporary swelling of scalp and forehead.

Are there any pre or post treatment precautions?

You should not take Aspirin, Aleve, Advil, Motrin or any prescription anti-inflammatory medication for one week prior to treatment since these medications reduce inflammation which may lessen your results. Cigarette smoking at any time will also diminish results. Following treatment you should not apply keratin hair fibers to your scalp or color or cut your hair for three days.

Contraindications to PRP scalp injections?

PRP is not recommended for advanced hair loss or hair loss associated with scarring. You should also not have PRP injections if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a platelet or blood disorder or are taking immunosuppressive medications such as corticosteroids, or biologic medications.
